Each New York Fashion Week, certain designer clothes are deemed to be fashion-conscious top picks. In the past, everyone was wearing the Prada logo tank tops as well as minimalist strappy heels by The Row. In the past week, however the delicate Manolos were overshadowed by a shoe that was destined to become a hit MSCHF’s huge red boots, appropriately dubbed”the Big Red Boot.
If you’re not familiar to MSCHF’s work, the brand is an creative fashion label that enjoys making their products available to make an impact (often in a controversial way). They’ve made footwear that look like castings for medical purposes, Birkinstock sandals constructed from Hermes Birkins as well as the even Satan shoes together and Lil Nas X that featured an actual blood drop on the soles. The label likes to push beyond the limits of what is fashionable, and most importantly, draw attention to itself. Their latest offering–which resembles the kind of thing Mario wears from Super Mario would wear–comes out today. They cost $350 and consisting from TPU rubber and an EVA mid-outsole. They draw inspiration from the design of an video game. “Cartoonishness is an abstraction that frees us from the constraints of reality,” the press release of the boots reads.
The slam-dunk boots were seen on street style and celebrity celebrities during New York Fashion Week. Vogue‘s street-style photographer Phil Oh captured them on Dorian Electra, who styled the pair by wearing a cropped coat mini skirt (to expose the shoes fully) and a beret in red. The model Sarah Snyder paired with a shiny black tights and a red dress. TikTok model and star Wisdom Kaye styled them with athletic shorts. The majority of the people seemed to let the boots to be the main focus (and it’s hard to avoid it). Outside of the fashion scene There’s been a few celebrities sporting them. The basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander donned them to the arena prior to games; Diplo wore them to attend the Knicks game. Janelle Monae even shot hoops while wearing the shoes.
In light of how ridiculous and bizarre the shoes are an absolute novelty, it’s a bit of a shock to discover how fast–and how the fashion industry has taken to the shoes, even before they’re launched, no less. They’re definitely a must wear: A variety of TikTok videos demonstrate how it’s the effort it takes to put the boots on and off. However, if fashionistas love one thing, it’s probably a novelty, and these boots were the talk of the town and everyone was taking notice this season. The people who wore these boots will earn points for their risk-taking. But something tells us that they’ll be as outdated as the Nintendo 64 come next season.
